Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance

There is an old saying “If you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel”. There is a lot of truth to that statement.

Everyone hopes their holiday will be the trip of a lifetime, full of amazing memories and experiences. But, you should always expect the unexpected when travelling. And for the sake of something that can cost just a few dollars per day, it really is a small price to pay for piece of mind.

There are a multitude of horror stories that could have been avoided by having travel insurance cover ranging from lost luggage, medical emergencies to the sudden death of a travel companion and it can lead to a very costly and heartbreaking situation.

Don’t put yourself in that position. It is better to have travel insurance and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Some tips:

  • Purchase travel insurance when you book your travel. The policy will protect you from the date you purchase the policy against a host of unforeseen circumstances that could force you to cancel your travel plans. Most travel suppliers charge cancellation fees and travel agents will usually add theirs on top (protecting their commission). It can be very costly.
  • Make sure you are covered for the areas you are travelling to – If in doubt, choose the highest level cover which is usually “worldwide” including USA.
  • Make sure you are adequately covered for the entire duration of your trip – If you change dates or extend your holiday, amend your travel insurance policy too.
  • Make sure you read the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) to make sure the cover is right for you – And what you will be covered for.

A lot of credit cards have a travel insurance component, but it can be very restrictive.

Make sure you are fully aware of the following:

  • Who is actually covered – Often it is the primary card holder only, even for medical emergencies. Your wife/husband/partner/children may not be covered by this insurance.
  • In cases of medical emergencies – who do you contact? are they contactable 24/7? Again often only the primary card holder is able to access the travel insurance connected to the credit card. Unless listed as a secondary card holder, any other person may not be able to make the call.
  • How much of your travel is covered – Is it the whole holiday? or only parts paid for with that card? sometimes there has to be a minimum of travel purchased with that card before you are eligible to access the travel insurance component.

Don’t let your holiday of a lifetime, turn into your biggest nightmare.
